The Family of God

Here is part of the forward that Jake Hamilton wrote for the The Family of God book…the book should be released the first week in March:

“I don’t know what you were expecting as you picked up this book. Perhaps you’re a leader trying to learn how to do things a little different in your church, maybe you have a small group on a campus and are looking for a few new ideas, or maybe you’ve heard about Jesus Burgers and the IV crew and are just looking for some cool stories. Whatever your reasoning is you need to lay it down and prepare yourself for what’s in the following pages. This is not a “how-to” book nor a “step by step” plan for developing a community in a college town. These are stories of sacrifice and triumph, failure and heartbreak — all of which form bonds that can either last a lifetime or divide you at the start.

Real relationships take courage, sacrifice and humility. Many people are merely looking for the next good meeting and the next hip church they can attend. Let me tell you what I think God wants: He wants to destroy all your perceptions about what relationships look like and what they cost; He wants you to examine your heart and with the help of the Holy Spirit root out selfishness and pride, two of the most destructive forces in relationships; and He wants to help build a new foundation for when the waves of the world crash against the foundations of your friendships and marriages you are left standing firm for others to see. It is going to be healing for many of us to talk about the guilt we have in relationships and to finally yell at the top of our lungs, “I suck at this, somebody please help me!” Okay, maybe that’s just me. But I will tell you what, when I found mothers and fathers to help me I learned that I can trust and love with reckless abandon and without fear of rejection mucking up the place.”
